Professional Urban Grrl's No-Sweat Triathalon

Sportswear: Black leggings, black wool tunic sweater, black ballet flats, teal double-breasted spring trench (Pool: black swimsuit, black swim cap, pink goggles)
Getting to the starting line:  Leave work in taxi with colleague for an in-transit meeting.

Start:  Union Station

1st Leg (Walk) - Walk and talk with colleague heading north on North Capitol Street, part company at H Street.  Hang a right.  Cross bridge over train tracks.  Admire spring day - low humidity, temperature in the low-seventies, late daylight (it's already six-thirty! and the light gives everything a spring-pink glow).  Arrive on the other side of tracks - H Street NE, the edgy in-neighborhood with bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, with a hip-hop-city-punk-funk vibe. Recall the previous evening in one such establishment with friends and drinks.  Make note to self to hang out there more, and check out some of the new places.

2nd Leg (Bike) - Grab a Capital Bikeshare bicycle.  Place black work bag on the front carrier, and secure with neato fitted bungee cord.  Unbutton trench coat for ease of moment, and for cool teal trailing effect while riding.  Board bike, and head south on 4th Street NE past lovely, historic, restored rowhouses.  Note buds on trees giving a light fuzzy green-  or sometimes rose-, colored  glow of their early leaves.  Note beautiful spring gardens in postage-stamp front yards - tulips, daffodils, and blazing yellow forsythia.  Zig-zag through the neighborhood streets towards Eastern Market - going past more lovely house, small city parks full of dogs, kids, and friendly neighbors cavorting in the early evening, brought together by their shared community and the pleasant spring evening.  Arrive at Eastern Market, and park bike in the CaBI bike dock.

Pit Stop -  Enter Marvelous Market for a bottle of water and pack of soy nuts.  Sit outside on the french cafe chairs.  Check iPhone for messages.  Greet and chat with neighbor MS.

3rd Leg (Swim) - Enter public pool facility, and change into swimwear.  Shower quickly, and enter pool for 30 minutes of laps.  Breathe in, breathe out.  Let head roll out its day.  Marvel in the head-clearing power of exercise.   Chat with lanemate about water temperature - a tad cooler than lately.  Exit pool, shower, change.

Homeward Bound - Grab a CaBi bike for the short ride to the next docking station.  Walk remaining three blocks.

Finish: Home. Greet Dear Daughter, read books, snuggle, and wish sweet dreams.

Spring training never felt so good.

RSAmazing - Changing Educational Paradigms

Wow!  I was recently introduced to RSA Animate, and their Vision Video Webcasts (above and more later).  This is such cool stuff!   And here's the scoop...

The 250 year old Royal Society for the encouragement of the Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce is now tagged "RSA - 21st Century Enlightenment."  An idea lab and exchange for creative thinking, design, innovation and social progress that hosts a network of RSA Fellows, provides platforms for experts to fuel public discourse, and supports interdisciplinary projects for social change solutions.  Unfortunately, the website is not nearly as well-presented and organized, as their individual products.  Creativity and brilliant minds are messy, I guess.  But I digress.

When I first came across RSA Animate, we were discussing how to present and package relatively complex research and ideas so they are easy to follow, understand, and ultimately stick.  If you take 12 minutes or so to watch the video link, you will see what I mean.  [Please pause to watch video link here, then continue after the jump]

OMG. Hold me back...the iPhone 4 is here!

I like design.  I like tech.   I like sexy.  But for years now, despite the drool, I have not yet caved into buying an iPhone.  I suppose this is for a few reasons.

First, I'm not really an early adopter.  I like to follow what's going on, but I can be a bit of a skeptic, so I wait to see if the hype actually delivers.  I also like when those other early adopters pay the price and suffer the bugs while I wait it out.

Second, I'm too cheap.  I wouldn't describe myself as frugal.  I like stuff.  I like nice stuff.  I spend money, sometimes lots, sometimes too much.  I'm not typing this while lying on my mattress stuffed with $100's for my "rainy day fund."  Alas, not.  But I do feel a little better about myself when I resist the temptation, when I don't spend frivolously, when I delay my gratification, when I anticipate... when, at last,  I somehow make a calculation - both financial and psychological, and probably more psychological than financial - that I am finally ready to make the purchase.

And finally, I wait, and wait, and wait, and procrastinate.  First, for my stupid Verizon contract to end (October, then January for my second line).  Then, to see if Apple will open up its exclusive contract with AT&T (it did not).  Then, for the announcement that the iPhone 4 was being released (June), with the all important multitask features, and whatever other (smart) bells and whistles it boasts.

All that has come to pass, and the iPhone 4 is in stores tomorrow.  The reviews are excellent.  I completely [HEART] David Pogue, who loves the iPhone 4, and if he told me to drink the KoolAid, I totally would.  Here's a David Pogue NYTimes video review of iPhone vs Android phones - this is like delicious smut to me!

So my purchase is imminent, but not quite immediate.  I'm sort of waiting for my next paycheck (June 30) or the one after that (July 15).  And I kind of can't decide if I will buy before or after my Europe trip (July 14-19) so I can get used to a new phone and new apps and new plan....But in any case, I'm getting an iPhone, at last! and really, really, really soon...and I can't wait!
